Description

Drawing on historical and contemporary research in Indigenous Guaraní settlements in northwest Argentina, this book examines the booms and busts of commodities central to the regional and global economy, including maize, sugar, oil and gas, and soy. It traces the circulation of ideas, capital, and labour that made extraction in the Gran Chaco possible and explores how people experience and respond to extractive abundance. Moving between individual perspectives, historical accounts, and unfolding events, it shows how household life intersects with global corporate rationalities and how commodity cycles shape experiences of democracy, citizenship, and life on the economic periphery.
