Support Our OA Initiatives
As a mission-driven scholarly publisher, Berghahn Books is committed to advancing equitable open access initiatives benefiting authors and libraries while making research available to a broad audience. We offer libraries ways to support open access affordably and authors to publish open access without cost burdens. Gold open access options are also available for any publication mandates instituted by our authors' funding partners.
With the help of the library community and generous institutional funders, we have been able to publish over 200 open access books and 22 open access journals to date.
With rigorous peer-review and production standards, Berghahn drives innovative contributions to scholarship in its fields of specialty. Libraries can support open access research with equity, sustainability, and bibliodiversity in mind with the following initiatives:
Berghahn Open Anthro – Subscribe-to-Open

BOA is an initiative launched in 2020 that currently includes 16 core anthropology journals using the S2O model to transition new volumes to full open access. With a mission to support equity and diversity in authorship, there are no APCs for authors to publish. A conditional model, it relies on subscription payments from libraries to publish forthcoming volumes open access with each new subscription year. It also enables libraries to support by collection or at the title level depending on their budget.
Berghahn Migration and Development Studies

Launched in 2021, the Berghahn Migration and Development Studies initiative uses a collective funding approach which promotes and advances open scholarship in a way that is sustainable for both publisher and participating institutions. 20 front-list titles are added to the collection annually, covering the topics of international migration and movement. As institutions sign up for the collection and pledge their financial support, we are then able to fund the cost of converting titles to be available as open access. The number of open access titles is dependent on the number of institutional participants.
Knowledge Unlatched Select

Berghahn partners with Knowledge Unlatched, which provides collective funding opportunities for selected titles. The current pledging cycle focuses on titles related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
