Drawing on Hannah Arendt's writings, The World is a Stage uncovers the dramatic foundations of her political thought. In her analysis of totalitarianism, revolution, student movements and other political phenomena, Arendt draws on theatrical concepts such as tragedy, the spectator, and character, while dramatic action provides the model for her concept of politics. Stephen Most also explores the political dimensions of theater, from Greek tragedy and Shakespeare to Enlightenment and modern drama. In so doing, he clarifies Arendt’s claim that "theater is the political art par excellence", while arguing that politics itself is a theatrical art which everyone may engage with for the sake of the world.

Stephen Most is a writer and filmmaker. He is the author of River of Renewal, Myth and History in the Klamath Basin and Stories Make the World and writer/producer of Wilder than Wild and River of Renewal, which won the American Indian Film Festival's "best documentary" award. Among the Academy Award-nominated documentaries he contributed to are Promises and Berkeley in the Sixties. His plays include Poe, Raven's Seed, Watershed, and A Free Country.
